Emotional Availability

Understanding why closeness can sometimes feel difficult.

It's feeling safe enough to let it in.

Perhaps you long for closeness...

Yet find yourself pulling away when someone gets too close.

Perhaps relationships end just as they begin to feel serious.

Or you choose people who seem emotionally unavailable themselves.

Part of you wants connection.

Another part feels safer without it.

If this feels familiar...

You make sense.

The patterns beneath emotional availability

Emotional availability isn't about how much you care.

It's often about what your nervous system learnt about closeness.

Perhaps vulnerability once felt risky.

Perhaps your emotions weren't welcomed.

Perhaps relying on other people led to disappointment.

Your mind and body adapted.

Not because something is wrong with you.

Because distance once felt safer than being hurt.

At the time, that made perfect sense.

How it can show up

Perhaps you...

• Keep people at a distance.

• Find it difficult to open up.

• Pull away when relationships become closer.

• Feel uncomfortable depending on others.

• Choose emotionally unavailable partners.

• Tell yourself you don't really need anyone.

These aren't flaws.

They're protective patterns.

There is almost always a reason.

When understanding becomes change

Emotional availability isn't something you force.

It grows through safety.

Little by little...

You begin to recognise when you're protecting yourself.

You become more comfortable with vulnerability.

You trust yourself again.

Connection begins to feel safer.

Warmer. More natural.

Not because you've become someone different.

But because your nervous system no longer needs to keep closeness at a distance.

How we work together

At Papillon, we don't begin by asking why you can't open up.

We begin by understanding what made closeness feel difficult in the first place.

Together, we'll gently explore the experiences and protective patterns that shaped the way you connect today.

We'll make sense of them together.

And together, we'll discover why.

Wherever you're starting, we'll begin there...

You don't need to force yourself to be more open before beginning therapy.

You don't need to have everything figured out.

You simply need somewhere safe to begin.

We'll begin where you are.

A quiet truth

“The capacity for closeness was never lost. It has simply been waiting to feel safe.”
