Separation & Breakups

Sometimes the relationship ends. The connection doesn't.

Perhaps you've walked away from a relationship that you knew wasn't right.

Or perhaps someone else made that decision for you.

Separation and breakups can bring grief, anxiety and uncertainty, even when part of you knows the relationship needed to end.

Yet part of you still feels connected.

In your thoughts.  Your body.  Your memories.

You tell yourself you should be further on by now.

Yet something still hurts.

If this feels familiar...

You make sense.

The patterns beneath the loss

The end of a relationship isn't only about losing the person.

Sometimes it's the loss of who you were with them.

The future you imagined.

The safety you hoped you'd found.

Or the old wounds the ending quietly awakens.

Perhaps this isn't the first goodbye that's felt this painful.

Perhaps this relationship has touched something much older.

Your mind and body are responding in the ways they learnt to protect you.

At the time, those responses made perfect sense.

How it can show up

Perhaps you...

• Replay conversations over and over.

• Blame yourself for what happened.

• Find it difficult to let go.

• Wonder whether you made the right decision.

• Question your own worth.

• Feel torn between holding on and moving forward.

• Notice familiar relationship patterns repeating.

These aren't signs that you're weak.

They're protective responses.

There is almost always a reason.

When understanding becomes change

Healing isn't about forgetting.

It's about making sense of what happened.

Little by little...

You begin to understand the relationship differently.

You reconnect with yourself.

You stop carrying responsibility that isn't yours.

You trust your own judgement again.

The future begins to feel possible.

Not because the relationship no longer mattered.

But because it no longer has to define your story.

How we work together

At Papillon, we don't begin by asking you to move on.  We begin by understanding what this relationship meant to you.

Together, we'll gently explore the experiences, losses and protective patterns that have been awakened through the ending.

Through psychotherapy and somatic therapy, we can work with both the thoughts and emotions surrounding the breakup and what your body may still be holding.

We'll make sense of them together.  We'll begin with understanding.

Wherever you're starting, we'll begin there...

There isn't a right way to grieve.

There isn't a timeline you have to follow.

You simply need somewhere safe to begin.

Let's begin together.

A quiet truth ...

“You can know it needed to end and still grieve what could've been.”
